Connecting to Your Server with FTP

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is a means to connect directly to your server for the purpose of managing files. You can upload, download, and move files on the server using an FTP connection.

You will need an FTP client on your computer to connect to the server’s file system. We recommend using FileZilla, which you can download here and find instructions for below.

Note: You can use your DirectAdmin username and password to connect to FTP. If you need additional FTP accounts set up, see our guide to creating them.

Connecting to FTP in FileZilla
  1. Open FileZilla.
  2. In the “Host” field in the Quickconnect bar, enter your server name, such as ‘server.vacares.com”.
  3. If you don’t know your server address, you can also use the address for the domain you are connecting to, such as ‘yourdomain.com’
  4. Enter your FTP username and password.
  5. Enter the port number ‘21’. (This is the default port number, but if we have told you to use a different port for FTP please do so).
  6. Click “Quickconnect” or press Enter to connect to the server.
  7. If a warning appears about an unknown host key, click “OK”.
