There are some expecting mothers who are always anxious to know if their baby is still alive inside. They frequently visit their doctor for check-ups. However, this does not pose much of a benefit. It only disturbs their physician and makes the pregnant woman tired and susceptible to diseases. They also worry if their baby has some defects or disorders. Some mothers, on the other hand, simply enter a horrible trance where all the worst possibilities (in the context of pregnancy, you probably know what these “worst possibilities” are) seem to come to life. All of these could be very detrimental to your health and to the development of the child inside you.

So what is your best option? Easy. Have your own fetal Doppler.

What is a Fetal Doppler?
A fetal Doppler is a hand held medical device usually used by physicians to detect and monitor the heart beat of a fetus as part of prenatal care. Invented by Dr. Edward H. Hon in 1958, this fetal heart monitor functions according to the principle of Doppler Effect, a theory proposed by Christian Doppler in 1842. This device is placed on a pregnant woman’s belly to detect the sound waves coming from the heart of the baby. These sound waves will then be transferred to a receiving monitor. Not like an ordinary stethoscope, fetal Doppler monitors amplify the sound so anyone in the room can hear baby’s heart beat. There are even models that present the heart beat per minute of the fetus on a visual chart.

Renting and Buying a Fetal Doppler
Nowadays, these fetal heart monitors are not exclusive to doctors and health providers anymore. They are now being sold or rented by a lot of medical stores. Owning a fetal Doppler monitor is recommended for mothers who cannot resist being anxious to know their unborn child’s condition. If you have your own fetal heart monitor, you don’t need to go to your doctor and disturb him every now and then from his busy work just to have your baby’s heartbeat checked. You can just do it on your own! You can also monitor your baby by yourself. You can record his beats per minute and see if there is any progress. If you detect any abnormalities, you can immediately take actions on it; whereas, if you still wait for your scheduled date of appointment with your physician, things could go worse without your realizing it.

On the other hand, availing your own fetal Doppler is expensive. One unit usually costs more or less $250. Fetal Doppler rental, which is relatively cheaper, approximately costs $40 a month, depending on the model.

Through a wheelchair lift, the wheelchair-bound person can get up and down the floors of his house easily. This will make him more active, independent and, most of all confident. It can even help him realize that he is still capable of doing things despite his physical limitation.

A wheelchair lift is a device that carries the wheelchair and its occupant up or down a certain height. There are two types of this device based on its power mechanism: the electric and hydraulic wheelchair lift. An electric wheelchair lift can be installed on mechanical door openers and telephone jacks. Because this is relatively cheaper than the hydraulic kind, people who have a limited budget end up buying this lift. However, since this unit is electric, it cannot operate in the absence of electricity. Fortunately, there are models of this kind that include batteries so they will work even during a black out. Also, an electric wheelchair lift is much easier to manage than a hydraulic one. The hydraulic wheelchair lift, on the other hand, is more costly than the first type. Yet, one good thing about this lift is that it always functions even if there is power failure.

Different models of wheelchair lifts abound on the market. There are models which can be permanently installed, while there are some that are portable. They may also be installed on a staircase, on a van, or may be simply carried around anywhere the disabled wishes to go.

For wheelchair-bound people that are confined in their house, a residential wheelchair is most appropriate. These lifts come in different models according to your preferences. These models include vertical platform lifts, inclined platform lifts, portable lifts, among others. All of these have a distinct platform design that can contain the wheelchair in various dimensions.

In spite of the differences in their models, all residential wheelchair lifts are designed with quality safety features. These include under-platform sensors, emergency stop buttons, anti-skid surface, emergency alarm, handrails, manual lowering device and cable safety device. Through these safety features, not only would the patient feel comfortable, he would also feel safe during the travel.

Some of the leading manufacturers of residential wheelchair lifts are Savaria Concord, Garaventa and ThyssenKrupp Access. Before you buy a lift for your house, you should first check the features of the model, its loading capacity and its warranty. It is also recommended that you choose a trustworthy and authorized dealer. A good dealer can aid you in finding the best model that fits your needs and your budget.

For someone who is suffering from arthritis, every movement, even a single short motion, could be very excruciating. Arthritis hurts. But thanks to cherries, your hurt will soon be eased.

According to the scientists of the Agricultural Research Service from the United States Department of Agriculture, along with researchers from some universities, the natural compounds found in cherries can actually mitigate the agonizing arthritic inflammation pains. That is why eating enough cherries a day could prevent or lessen the gravity of inflammatory conditions, cardiovascular diseases and even cancer.

It has been proven that a tart cherry contains more nutrients than its alternative, the sweet cherry. When you go to the market, you usually see tart cherries in packs. This type of cherries is usually used as an ingredient in making pies, cookies and salads. Who would have thought that these petite, almost unnoticeable fruits could be holding the key to our health?

As mentioned, cherries can be eaten in a lot of delicious ways. They can be made into juice concentrates, meat stuffing, dried cherries and toppings for a cake or an ice cream. And all of them contain a suitable amount of nutrients that keep us healthy, strong, and resistant to sicknesses.

Cherries are known for their high level of antioxidants. Antioxidants are important in our body since they fight the renegade oxygen molecules that damage our cells and cause cancer and heart diseases. Every research about cherries’ role in health concludes that the fruit’s anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, and anti-carcinogenic properties are all attributed to the antioxidants it contains. Anthocyanins, the pigment that provides cherries their rich red color, have exceptional antioxidant content.

The Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) measures the antioxidant capacity of foods. The larger the amount of free radicals that a food absorbs, the higher is its ORAC score. According to nutritionists, we should consume 3,000 to 5,000 ORAC units a day in order to preserve our health. A quarter cup of dried cherries alone ― which we can readily eat as a snack or a side dish ― can give us 3,060 ORAC units! Moreover, cherries have 17 different antioxidants, putting the fruit on the 14th place among the top 50 antioxidant containing fruits of all. A half cup serving of canned cherries can lessen inflammatory and arthritis pain that a 1.41 gram of aspirin does, while a one-half cup of frozen cherries is equivalent to 0.9 grams of aspirin.

So why choose a processed, artificial medicine, if you have the option to take this natural, God-created wonder fruit that functions even better than what drugs do? Remember, the more natural, the better.

Many women nowadays are complaining about hair loss. They search for answers everywhere – in their diet, hormones or genetic inheritance. However, most cases of temporary hair loss have another major cause, which unfortunately is often underestimated: stress and emotional imbalance.

Of course, in order to avoid confusion and misunderstanding, let’s separate from the beginning the two main forms of hair loss: irreversible and temporary. The irreversible hair loss – the form of baldness (or androgenic alopecia) we see very often in men – is most of the times caused by genetic predisposition, being very difficult to stop or reverse.

The temporary hair loss is usually a consequence of your lifestyle – stress, another disease, a poor diet or improper hair care procedures – and goes away as soon as you eliminate the cause.

Now let’s go back to stress and find out why and how it is causing temporary hair loss. Our body is a perfectly synchronized system. Or at least it should be – when we are healthy. If a part of the system manifests some dysfunctions (for example, hair loss or hair thinning), it is usually a warning sign that the system is unbalanced.

The main problem of the modern medical methods is the tendency to focus on treating the part, without bothering to harmonize the whole. The same can be said about hair loss. Instead of running to the drug store and buying some hair loss pills, it would be much more effective to ask yourself what is the real cause of your dysfunction and get rid of it! When it comes to female hair loss treatment, a holistic, natural approach is our best friend!

Our state of mind has the enormous power of reflecting itself on our physical state. If you are positive and strong, your body will instantly respond to this attitude, becoming healthier and more resistant. If, on the other hand, you have a negative attitude towards life, full of stress, anger and anxiety, don’t be surprised when your immunity weakens and you become a frequent visitor of hospitals and other health care facilities.

Stress can cause hair loss in many different ways. For some people, the mechanism is simple: after a certain time of constant stress or lack of emotional fulfillment, your body’s natural resistance will weaken and you’ll become vulnerable to all sort of dysfunctions. The follicles often lose their strength in such cases and the hair starts falling more than usual, also losing its natural volume and shine. After a period of calm and stability, the hair regenerates as well.

Besides this simple scenario, there are many other ways in which negative emotions can affect the beauty of your hair. For example, you can develop a certain condition as a result of stress (related to your immunity, your internal organs or your hormones). This condition would be a result of imbalance and would create more side-effects in its turn, including hair loss. In this case, ‘treating’ the condition will not be enough for solving your hair loss problem. Taking medication for stomach pain, for example, does not ‘cure’ your stomach – it only hides the symptoms.

For having long term results, you have to annihilate the initial cause of the disease – in our hypothetical case – the stress. Only after that, you will be able to generate a positive chain reaction that will eventually make your hair loss stop. Smile more often, believe in yourself and don’t be surprised when little miracles start to happen!

Because of the wide array of choices that the market gives us, it seems impossible sometimes to choose the best orthopedic pillows. So here are a few tips that you can think about and consider when buying your own pillow.

1.	Know which body part you want to support. More often than not, a single orthopedic pillow is designed to conform to and support a specific body part. There are a few pillows of this type that cater the whole body. So when you shop, keep first in mind the body part that you think needs orthopedic support the most. Normally though, most people buy neck pillow since it is very useful not just in sleeping but also in work and in traveling.

2.	Look for the pillow that meets your purpose. As mentioned, pillows are not exclusively used as sleeping aids; they can also be useful in any place that requires a prolonged stationary position, say in the office or while driving a car. If, however, you need an orthopedic pillow so you will have a better sleep, you can buy a body pillow. This type of pillow is long, usually shaped like a number 7 or a letter C. It cradles the head, neck, shoulders, lumbar region, legs and knees, and is typically used by side-sleepers.

3. If you are pregnant, choose a pillow that conforms to your maternal changes. Various pregnancy orthopedic pillows are actually available on the market now. These pillows aid pregnant women in having a comfortable, painless and safe sleep which both the mother and the child need.

4. If you are a certified traveler, buy a travel orthopedic pillow. This pillow, which is shaped like a horseshoe, supports your neck and prevents it from falling on the side when you take forty-winks in the car, bus, airplane, or other vehicle that does not allow you to lie down. This pillow is also called neck travel pillow by some.

5.	If you work in an office and you devote your whole time working in a sitting position, you probably need a lumbar support orthopedic pillow. Most office workers use this pillow to avoid having a stiff and sore back after work. It gives comfort to the curve of your lower back by reducing the strain on the spine.

6.	Lastly and probably the most important tip of all, you should always consult your physician or a chiropractor. If you make any decision to resolve any posture-related dilemma, it is always best that the prescription comes from a trained medical professional.

Whiplash should not be underestimated. Although it may seem like a mere neck pain, it is still an injury that damages your body. What most people fail to realize is that whiplash may result to various complications if the injury is left untreated.

The question is: why does everyone tend to underestimate whiplash? This is maybe because of the late manifestations of its signs and symptoms. Unfortunately, if this trauma is not attended as soon as possible, it might get worse as time passes by. The good thing is, there are now several treatments for whiplash injury; one of which is physical therapy.

Physical therapy treatment has been proven to ease the pain caused by whiplash injury and gradually cure it when merged with other forms of treatment like medications and collars. A professional and well-trained physical therapist can refurbish the tissues and ligaments that were damaged because of the accident.

Physical therapy consists of active and passive treatments. In the active treatment, a physical therapist will teach the patient different exercises to strengthen the neck and to develop the joint’s range of motion. This treatment is individualized, thus one’s health and history will be taken into account, and that is, someone with rheumatic heart disease won’t have the same therapy as someone who has a healthy heart. This therapy can also help the patient to correct his posture and improve his spinal column.

Passive therapy, on the other hand, helps the patient to relax his body. This treatment is passive because the injured person does not necessarily need to actively participate in the therapy. There are different kinds of passive physical therapy:

Hot and Cold Therapies. In this method, the therapist uses heat to establish good blood flow and make the blood reach the damaged area. The circulation provides the body with oxygen and nutrition. Therefore, if the blood reaches the injured portion of the body, healing is promoted.

Alternatively, cold therapies are applied to slow down blood circulation. This is done to lessen muscle spasms, inflammation and pain. Therapists alternate these two treatments.

Ultrasound. This treatment increases blood circulation just like the hot therapy. It lessens swelling, muscle tension, spasms, cramping and pain in the muscle. Sound waves are sent into the patient’s muscle tissues. The sound waves create a mild heat that boosts blood circulation.

Deep Tissue Massage. Whiplash may result to muscle tension. This therapy is usually done to treat stiffness in the muscle. The therapist may use friction and direct pressure to release the tension and to encourage faster healing.

While there are thousands of pills and tablets available over the counter for insomnia, many still opt for nature enriched remedies for various sleeping disorders. There is no harm in trying such supplements if that means you are less at risk of the possible associated side effects. Listed below are some herbal medicines used worldwide to address the said sleeping condition which can help improve the quality of your life.

Chamomile
Chamomile has been used for thousands of years to treat insomnia. Chamomile is a relaxant and has strong anti-inflammatory properties. It contains apigenin, a chemical that works in the brain to produce muscle relaxation and initiate sleep. Chamomile also contains spiroether, an antispasmodic that eases episodes of pain, and chrysin, a compound that relieves anxiety. Chamomile dried leaves and flowers are often packed and distributed widely in the market. Consumed as tea, these can be purchased over the counter in both bagged and loose form. A cup of chamomile tea taken an hour before bed can calm digestion, relieve nervous tension and irritability- promoting good sleep. Chamomile can also be used externally by adding a few drops of the essential oil in the bath.

Lavander
Lavender is a help for persons having troubles in falling asleep. Its scent is well known for having a soothing and calming effect. Lavender can also be used to relieve irritability and calm nerves. Its flowers can be produced as brewed tea, while its stems are useful for producing essential oil perfect for a relaxing bath and massage. This popular flowering herb’s essential oil depresses the central nervous system in a manner comparable to many pharmaceutical tranquilizers.

Valerian
Valerian is a tall, marsh-loving plant that is best known as a treatment for insomnia. Its roots are being dried before use. Valerian herb has been used as a natural remedy for insomnia, anxiety, pain, and stomach complaints for centuries. Unlike conventional medication for insomnia, valerian is considered non-addictive and generally safe, with few adverse effects. Clinical studies show that it also significantly improves sleep latency, which is how researchers describe the time it takes a person to fall asleep.

St. John’s Wort
It is a yellow flowering plant that is native to Europe. St. John’s Wort contains a number of medicinal ingredients which have been proven to treat mild to moderate depression, anxiety and insomnia. Studies show that extracts from the plant help elevate levels of neurotransmitters (biochemical messengers) in the brain such as serotonin, which affect mood.

Kava Kava
Kava kava is popular throughout the South Seas. It imparts a calm feeling, relaxes the body, and sometimes enhances communication and dreaming. This sedative herb is often used for sleeplessness and fatigue.

Hops
Hops have already been used for the treatment of sleeping disorders as early as the 1900s. The hops plant is typically used to flavor beer. Historically, the flowers have been used to treat mild insomnia.

Passionflower
Passionflower works as a herbal tranquillizer and was widely used by the Aztecs as an analgesic and sleep inducer. A gentle sedative, passion flower reduces nervous anxiety, irritability and has the additional benefit of being non-addictive.

A build-up of plaque can combine with foods not brushed away to form harmful acids that can lead to tooth loss and even gum disease. As early as toddler years, spare your child from unnecessary procedures with incalculable cosmetic dentistry price by promoting good dental hygiene to avoid unnecessary cavities and tooth decay. Below are tips to encourage your young ones brush and save their teeth.

1. Kids respond to the huge variety of dental products available in the market. Even if it means paying slightly more, invest on your child’s wish for a cartoon designed toothbrush and a flavored toothpaste. Toothbrushes that play music, light up, or are decorated with your child’s favorite TV character can be enticing. Allow your children participate in buying, letting him decide and choose for something that interests him/her may be just the thing to inspire your reluctant child. You’d be surprised to watch their level of cooperation in tooth brushing rise.

2. Get an electric toothbrush. The movement is interesting for kids who are still exploring things with their mouths. Powered toothbrushes are another option to spark their interest. Kids may be intrigued by the rotating or oscillating bristle action and the exciting noises. The battery-powered models are generally inexpensive, and like their manual counterparts, come in fun character versions that kids love.

3. Kids are interested in doing what their parents and older siblings do. As toddlers love copying most everything their parents do, start by buying identically colored brushes for your child and you. Next, see to it he can see what you’re doing with the toothbrush and let him try to mimic it. Make sure that toddlers see their brothers and sisters brushing their teeth whenever possible. Making tooth brushing a family event on a regular basis can make the whole process of teaching the child about good oral hygiene easier for you.

4. Different children respond to different tactics, so you may need to experiment. You may choose to make tooth brushing a race between you and your child. Give him or her reward if he beats you in a fast but proper way of tooth brushing as this triggers the child’s spirit of competition. Reward may be a form of appreciating what the child did by a treat to the mall or a tight hug to make him/her feel appreciated.

Humans are a living system of oxygen. People live because they breathe. Unfortunately, many times we tend to disregard the value of clean oxygen in the air. Pollution is increasing, areas are becoming more cramped, food items are becoming more hazardous, and many engage in unhealthy lifestyles. Little did we know that everything we do retaliates to us. Because of this, our body does not always receive the amount of oxygen that it requires.

Deficit in breathable air is usually termed as Oxygen Deficiency. Symptoms vary. They can range from the least hazardous symptoms (depression, dizziness, body pains, fatigue) to the worst of the kind (memory loss, stomach pains, respiratory problems, infection and even death).

This is caused by several factors. Some suggest that it is brought about by our bodily actions. Say, if the person engages in strenuous activities, he might be short of oxygen supply. Others suppose that this is caused by too heavy emotions, like excitement or fear. For instance, if the person gets so much excited, his adrenalin level also increases. As a result, he palpitates and respires more, which, in turn, boosts his use of oxygen. It is also said that infections limit the supply of oxygen in the body. Studies show that a healthy person’s blood oxygenation level is significantly different to that of a weak, sick, or ill person.

Oxygen deficiency or hypoxia can also be caused by exterior factors. If the person is situated in a location that is bereft of enough supply of breathable air, such as in extremely high or extremely low altitudes, he is susceptible to oxygen deficiency. Just the same, a confined or cramped space can also trigger difficulty in breathing. Asphyxiation, which is very common among factories and laboratories, is also another cause of this condition. People will be suffocated if the oxygen is depleted and is replaced by another material, like carbon monoxide which comes out of the fumes of burning coals.

Because of this, several means and products have come out to prevent the occurrence of oxygen deficiency by checking and monitoring one’s oxygen levels. One method is through the use of a direct blood sample which will be tested for the saturation of oxygen in the blood. This method can be painful and inconvenient. Another is the easy and painless way: through the use of a noninvasive oxygen monitor. This device is usually a pulse oximeter which analyzes the level of blood oxygenation by being attached to a translucent body part (ear lobe or fingertip). It is portable and can be used at home. Through this oxygen monitor technology, one can readily protect himself from harm by ensuring that he is getting the normal oxygen levels in his blood.

Life is a mysterious and beautiful miracle. No one knows why and how exactly it started on this planet or how it will eventually end. Philosophizing about our life on Earth is one of the most interesting experiences. But all the philosophy in the world doesn’t mean anything as long as it is not balanced by intention and action. Learning the laws of life and applying them correctly can make our existence meaningful and fulfilled, even if we can’t know all the answers.

Our life is a process of continual transformation: being born, growing up, being mature, getting old and dying. However, not all the aspects of this path are pleasant: we all like to be young, beautiful and full of strength. But is there someone who likes being old, wrinkled and sick?

Growing old is a natural process. Nobody can reverse or stop it. But there are many ways of slowing down this process. Some of them are myths, others are objective realities that really work for millions of people.

First of all, let’s analyze a little the aging process. You certainly noticed that most of the time people of the same age look differently. This proves that it’s possible to slow down the aging process and make our path in this life more pleasant and dignified. Losing your dignity and self-esteem when you’re getting old is one of the most frustrating experiences. We all deserve to get old and die without losing our verticality, our self-esteem and the respect of the people we know and love.

As you all probably noticed, there are two different ways of getting old:

The first one (unfortunately, it’s also the most frequent one) is the painful and ugly premature aging: people start gaining extra weight, ‘acquiring’ various aches and diseases, their skin develops a bad unnatural color, not to mention the deep wrinkles and the skin bags.

The second one is also called ‘growing old gracefully’. As time passes, you become wiser and more experienced without losing your flexibility, your ability of enjoying life and that youthful spark in your eyes. You may have some wrinkles, but they are practically invisible for the people surrounding you. All they can see is a person with a young and shining soul who’s always curious and happy like a 5 year old kid. You always look fresh, full of energy and never get tired or annoyed. How can we achieve such a state of mind and body?

There are many ways of getting a face lift in a non-invasive, natural way. Deep breathing, healthy nutrition, facial exercises, drinking lots of liquids and, most important – a positive attitude towards life can do wonders for most of us.

However, sometimes it’s not possible to reverse only by natural means all the negative effects accumulated during decades of incorrect lifestyle. Fortunately, nowadays we have the option of combining organic remedies with the latest innovations in the field of non-surgical face lifts: laser face lift, microcurrent face lift, dermal fillers, dermabrasion, chemical peel, thermage or titan skin tightening.

Even if these methods are not entirely natural, requiring the use of certain technologies or injectable substances, they are still safer than plastic surgery, having less side-effects and complications. Make a good research before choosing a certain procedure in order to ensure that it will be the most appropriate for your particular needs.

It’s not possible to be 18 again. But it’s possible to be always young and full of life – all you have to do is never give up! With patience and continual effort, we can move mountains, not just our wrinkles!
